Turbulence can strike suddenly and and without warning.

This is why airlines consistently advise passengers to keep their seatbelts fastened whenever seated, even when the seatbelt sign is off. Clear-air turbulence, convective activity, and rapidly changing atmospheric conditions can all produce sudden encounters with little or no warning.
