The American Express® Green Card is one of the most underrated and rewarding American Express cards. If you want to supercharge the Membership Rewards points you earn, this is a card to consider.
In this post, I’d like to go over the details of this card’s welcome offer — admittedly it’s not the most exciting offer out there, but the offer isn’t the primary reason you’ll want to pick up this card. Furthermore, there’s a strategic order in which you may want to pick up this card, which is worth understanding.

What is the current Amex Green Card welcome offer?
The Amex Green Card currently has a welcome offer where you can earn 40,000 bonus Membership Rewards points after spending $3,000 within the first six months.
Admittedly there are much bigger and flashier bonuses out there. For example, check out the American Express® Gold Card, which has a big welcome offer, and is potentially very much worth it. But the publicly available welcome offer on the Amex Green Card also doesn’t get much better than this, so it’s a function of whether you value the card or not.
Personally, I value Amex Membership Rewards points at 1.7 cents each, meaning the 40,000 points are worth $680 to me. There are lots of great uses for Amex points, as they can be transferred to all kinds of useful airline and hotel partners.

Who is eligible for the Amex Green Card bonus?
In line with Amex’s “once in a lifetime” rule, the welcome offer on the Amex Green Card isn’t available to those who currently have the card, or those who have had the card (or previous versions of the card) in the past. On top of that, Amex’s general card restrictions apply. A couple of further things to note:
- You’re not eligible for the welcome offer on this card if you have or have had American Express Platinum Card® (review) or American Express® Gold Card (review); the inverse isn’t true, so there’s merit to applying for this card and then the other cards, since that is allowed without restrictions on the offer
- Amex typically has a limit of letting someone have at most five Amex credit cards (including personal and business cards); anecdotally this card is considered a hybrid card for these purposes, and doesn’t count toward that limit, which should make a lot more people eligible
See my guide to getting approved for the Amex Green Card. I just want to specifically emphasize that there’s merit to picking up this card before the Amex Platinum or Amex Gold so you can earn the welcome offer, and also that this doesn’t count toward the five card limit with Amex.

Is the Amex Green Card worth the annual fee?
The Amex Green Card has a $150 annual fee, and is underrated, as it’s probably the Membership Rewards card that gets the least attention. The card offers the following perks, among other things:
- The Amex Green Card has a lucrative rewards structure, and offers 3x points on dining, travel, and transit; this is one of the most rewarding Amex cards out there if you’re looking to earn points as quickly as possible
- The Amex Green Card offers a $209 CLEAR+ credit annually, whereby you can receive up to $209 per calendar year in statement credits when you pay for your CLEAR+ membership (subject to auto-renewal) with the card (enrollment required)
The rewards structure makes this card worth getting, and then the credit could help justify the annual fee. In fairness, I’d consider this card to be a competitor of the American Express® Gold Card, so some people may prefer that card.

Amex Green Card welcome offer FAQs
Bottom line
The Amex Green Card is an incredibly rewarding card, though it admittedly doesn’t have the most exciting welcome offer. In the long run this card can be worth keeping for the 3x points on dining, travel, and transit, which is among the most well rounded rewards structure you’ll find on any Amex card. On top of that, the card offers a CLEAR credit, which potentially more than justifies the annual fee, if you do consider it to be worth face value.
